Cake features very heavily in both the action of our sketch comedy but also in our personal lives. Consequently we will be offering free samples to the press and public as a way of promoting the show and spreading happiness. But not any old cake! No shop-bought sponges or high-class bakery cup-cakes for us but home-made delicacies road-tested to the max beforehand. I've been trying out a number of recipes and the clear winner is a cake that has a very unusual method. You put margarine, mixed fruit, sugar and water in a saucepan and boil the contents for 20 minutes! It makes for a very odd-looking soup but once the contents have cooled (a process that takes ages) and you've added eggs and flour then the mixture looks quite normal. The finished cake is really nice and moist and you can vary the recipe with either grated orange rind and juice or mixed spice. Email info@womenonthemake.com if you want the actual recipe. Yum yum.

A few months back the Women on the Make ladies rashly decided to take their entertaining comedy show Let Them Eat Cake! to the Edinburgh Fringe. We're all grown up enough to know that the costs are ridiculous and the chance of success only modest but, what the hell, we will not be defeated by the challenge and are now furiously fundraising. I take on the admin because it's basically my day job and for the last three months have been submerged by complex paper work related to the choosing of a theatre space, negotiating terms, completing the entry into the Fringe programme (12 hours of nail-biting complexity) and endless emails demanding instant attention. There's a sort of weird fascination in a project that has old-fashioned exactness built in to every process. Nothing vague or woolly about the pre-planning stage. Everyone you deal with sets deadlines, demands receipts for every communication and insists on rigid legal contracts. Of course the reason is that the Edinburgh Fringe is a multi-million enterprise with thousands of participants and stakeholders so the risk of litigation is quite high. Thankfully, we are hiring space at the Quaker Meeting House which, apart from having a lovely stage, raked seating AND a tea room is run by nice people whose motivation is essentially altruistic. All the profits from their Fringe season go to charity and the venue is run by volunteers. we are so looking forward to being there for 3 weeks.

But there's lots to do till 8th August - not least raise £3,000 towards the costs! We're on the way, having just hosted an event at Angela's house which started the campaign off with a splendid profit of £500. The next event is at the Natural Theatre's new space at Widcombe Institute on 9th June - stalls, wine and cheese, entertainment - it'll be marvellous!
